A family-friendly introduction to Cantonese opera, with live performance, audience interaction, music and dim sum
In March 2026, as part of WestK FunFest, three performances of the Tea House Theatre Family Experience offer a fun introduction to the traditional art of Cantonese opera, perfect for audiences of all ages.
The engaging 90-minute showcase is brought to life by the young actors and musicians of the Tea House Rising Stars Troupe, who demonstrate the four fundamental skills of the art form – singing, recitation, acting and martial arts.
The programme includes “The Fragrant Sacrifice” from the tragic love story Princess Cheung Ping, Quest for the Commander Seal – an original work with interactive elements created specially for children – and demonstrations of traditional Cantonese music. Throughout the performance, an expert host offers context and explanations, introducing the styles, traditions and techniques that shape this heritage art form.
To recreate the atmosphere of early 20th-century tea houses, audiences are also served traditional tea and dim sum during the performance.
